Discussing LPAs at Cheltenham Literature Festival

09 October 2024

During the 75th anniversary Times and Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival, our wills, trusts and probate lawyers took to the Huddle stage to discuss lasting powers of attorney (LPAs).

It can often be difficult to imagine a time when you or your loved ones might need help making decisions. At this free event, our lawyers spoke about planning for the future, as well as offered festival-goers friendly, one-to-one guidance on what to do if you don’t have an LPA in place.

As Cheltenham solicitors, we’ve partnered with Cheltenham Festivals for over 20 years and been part of the Gloucestershire community for over 75. Our expert lawyers help people at all stage of their lives and are recommended by national legal guides, Chambers and The Legal 500. Over the years, we have advised second and third generations of the same family on creating a will, lasting powers of attorney, trusts and inheritance tax planning.

Janine Guthrie, senior associate, chartered legal executive in our wills, trusts & probate team commented:

“It was great to meet everyone who came to the Huddle to listen and speak to us one-on-one. As always, being part of the Literature Festival line-up is a huge honour and as a firm that prides itself on personal service, we really enjoyed having the opportunity to meet local people, as well as those who travelled to the festival from further afield.”

For its 75th anniversary year, Willans also had the privilege of sponsoring the opening event of the 2024 Cheltenham Literature Festival, The Election Generals. During this event, Broadcasting House presenter Paddy O’Connell spoke with BBC’s John Sergeant and former secretary of state Nicky Morgan about the year in politics.

About LPAs

At Willans, we tailor our LPAs to suit our clients’ needs and wishes, taking into consideration factors many others forget when creating an LPA for themselves.

We obtain a clear picture of their wishes, their health needs now and any possible needs in the future, keeping a record of decisions for the attorneys. Our lawyers ensure that the attorneys are properly prepared for their role, understand their duties and have a point of contact should they have any questions.

Once completed, LPAs are sent to the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) to be registered. Because things can go wrong with the execution of LPAs – and that the OPG is working through a long backlog of applications – our lawyers make sure there are no issues or delays when they’re sent.

As well as an LPA for health and personal affairs, it’s also possible to put a business LPA in place. This nominates someone who a business owner trusts to take decisions regarding the running of the business, when they are no longer able to.
