Top commercial property lawyer joins Willans

20 February 2013

Willans is delighted to welcome a new partner to the firm.

Nigel Whittaker joins Willans’ commercial property team from the Cheltenham office of a global law firm, where he worked for 11 years.

He has a wealth of experience acting for a wide range of business clients, working with investors on the acquisition and disposal of high value commercial premises as well as for occupiers and landlords of commercial premises including training providers, recruitment companies and public house operators.

A particular specialism of Nigel’s is acting for charities and not-for-profit organisations including high profile national charities such as Sue Ryder, Scope, Shelter and Macmillan Cancer Support, assisting them in the significant expansion of their property portfolios in England and Wales.

Ranked as a leading individual by legal directory Chambers & Partners, he is described as ‘recognised for his work with high-profile charities in relation to their property concerns. Clients are impressed with his approachability and communication skills, and value his determination to “go straight to the issue, analyse the situation and give us the appropriate advice immediately”’.

Nigel is well known in the commercial property world and regularly lectures for Henry Stewart Conference Studies in London.

His arrival bolsters Willans’ expanding commercial property department, which last August was also joined by a former member of Nigel’s team at Charles Russell, associate Alasdair Garbutt. An experienced commercial property lawyer, Alasdair deals with a wide range of work in relation to sales & acquisitions, development transactions, landlord and tenant and property management matters.

Margaret Austen, Willans managing partner commented:

“We are very pleased to have appointed Nigel and are fortunate our reputation enables us to attract partners of Nigel’s calibre. Alasdair and Nigel are very capable lawyers and their arrival has provided additional strength and depth to the talents of our existing teams.

“At this time of the economic cycle, as confidence returns, there is more commercial activity being undertaken and our team is well placed to take advantage of this. With 4 full-time partners and an associate in our commercial property department, it is one of the strongest in the county!”

Nigel Whittaker said:

“I’m delighted to be joining Willans and welcome the opportunity, assisted by Alasdair, to expand our work with investors and occupiers within Gloucestershire and the surrounding area, offering first rate, practical advice at competitive rates. I look forward to being a key member of the team at the forefront of advising commercial clients on how best to meet their needs.”
