Taking bookings for April’s Make a Will Month in aid of medical charity Cobalt

26 February 2016

Making a will can offer peace of mind, bring any outstanding affairs into order, offer potential inheritance tax benefits and provide a vital source of income from any legacies left to charity.

Throughout April, our wills, probate and trusts lawyers are donating their expertise and time free of charge to write or update straightforward wills and in return people are asked to make a donation to local medical charity Cobalt.

Cobalt is a Cheltenham-based independent medical charity that helps people affected by cancer, dementia and other life-limiting conditions. The donations they receive help fund scanning and diagnosis, research, prevention, specialised nursing posts and cancer facilities for local people.

Simon Cook, partner and head of our wills, probate and trusts team said:

“Making a will often remains on a to-do list. More than two thirds of us don’t have one. It is so important as it provides peace of mind that your estate will be distributed as you wish. Although there is absolutely no requirement to do so, you may choose to leave a gift to charity which can help reduce inheritance tax on your estate.”

Julia Jenkins, head of fundraising at Cobalt said:

“Make a Will Month is about highlighting the importance of making your wishes known and making sense of some of that legal lingo. It’s also a great way of thinking about helping a local charity whilst ticking off that forever put off task on the to do list.

“Over the last five years we have raised over £50,000 in donations from solicitor’s waiving their fee. The donations we receive will be put towards the work Cobalt does in the community to support local people affected by cancer, dementia and other life limiting conditions.”
