Choosing the right care home: What needs to be considered?

25 September 2025

What are some of the key considerations to have when you’re choosing the right care home? Our wills, trusts & probate experts highlight a number of important questions that you should keep in mind for when the time comes around.

Choosing the right care home can be difficult and can involve balancing emotional, practical and financial factors. Below is a very short – but potentially helpful – guide towards what needs to be thought about before deciding on a particular choice.

  • What type of care is needed? Residential? Nursing? Respite?
  • How often are care plans reviewed?
  • What CQC rating are they?
  • How do the staff deal with residents?
  • What facilities are there?
  • What does the daily life and activities look like?
  • What are the costs? What is the contract like?
  • Have you got an LPA/EPA in place?
  • Is the right funding in place?

When deciding on the right care home, there are so many factors to take into account. We at Willans are here to guide you through every step of the process, including going through the care contract with you.
