Willans helps national charity acquire new out-of-town ‘superstore’ in Cheltenham’s Tewkesbury Road

26 February 2016

We continue to act in the shop expansion of national charity Sue Ryder, which today opens a 4,200 sq ft superstore on Tewkesbury Road in Cheltenham.

Sue Ryder is a well-known charity founded by Sue Ryder in 1953, which supports people with complex needs and life-threatening illnesses across the UK and internationally. It provides around 2.7 million hours of care to thousands of people every year and operates a hospice in Leckhampton, Cheltenham.

Through its chain of shops, Sue Ryder generates about £53 million in retail sales by selling donated and second-hand goods which contribute towards the charity’s objectives of providing care, advice, education and support services in local communities to help improve the lives of individuals – including their carers and families.

Willans’ commercial property team, led by partner Nigel Whittaker, handles all of the legal aspects of Sue Ryder’s property portfolio in England & Wales, made up of over 450 shops, numerous offices and other premises.

Commenting on their latest acquisition in Cheltenham, Nigel Whittaker said:

“It is always a pleasure to work with Sue Ryder on their national property portfolio. They are a valued and long-standing client and an inspiring charity carrying out exceptional work.

“It is particularly exciting to be helping them with their expansion plans in our home county and to use our wealth of experience to assist them with this fantastic new venture.”

Warren Stabler, legal adviser, Sue Ryder commented:

“This transaction progressed smoothly thanks to Willans’ usual excellent service. Their support continues to be a great help to our shop acquisition program, which helps us to raise the funds we need to provide care to those who need it most”.
