Our ‘Big Biz Quiz’ raises more than £3,000 for Winston’s Wish

17 May 2018

More than 150 people from the county’s leading businesses tested their wits at our charity quiz night on Tuesday 15 May, in support of childhood bereavement charity Winston’s Wish.

The quiz night at Manor by the Lake saw us play host to more than 40 teams, from businesses including Barclays, Brewin Dolphin Ltd, Crowe Clark Whitehill, Handelsbanken, Hazlewoods, Investec, Jelf Insurance, Bloxham PR and Lilian Faithfull.

Family law partner James Grigg resumed his role as quizmaster, putting the teams through the rounds of tricky brain-teasers. James, who is also head of our charity committee, commented: “We are delighted that the quiz has built up such a huge following, since it was first introduced six years ago. Manor by the Lake was full to the brim and the atmosphere was great. Thank you to everyone who entered a team or donated a raffle prize.

“It’s been a pleasure to support Winston’s Wish, our charity of the year, and to learn more about the life-changing work they do.”

The evening raised over £3,000 for the charity, which has its headquarters in Cheltenham’s Royal Crescent, a stone’s throw from the our offices on Imperial Square.

Malaney Varaljay-Boyce, head of regional fundraising and events at Winston’s Wish, commented: “We are so thankful to Willans for all of the amazing support they provide Winston’s Wish. Their commitment to raising funds and creating awareness surrounding the work that we do, has been invaluable.  At Winston’s Wish, our vision is a society where every child can get the help they need when someone close to them dies, and it is because of the support of firms like Willans, that we are able to continue to reach more children and give them the hope they need to lead full and flourishing lives.”

Martin Hughes, chief executive of Lilian Faithfull Homes, added: “Thank you for a wonderful evening. We were delighted to spend the evening with our friends at Willans in support of Winston’s Wish.”

The trophy was won by the team from Warwick Butchart Associates, with Griffiths Marshall in second place and Cambray Property Management in third.

Raffle prizes were generously donated by local businesses including KIBOUsushi, Cheeseworks, PennyWise Consultants, The Mayflower Restaurant, Stuart Holmes Hair & Beauty, The Stow Jewellers, X-Plan Business, The Jockey Club Cheltenham Racecourse and Nature in Art, which helped to boost the fundraising total.

The quiz night is one of a series of fundraising activities that we have undertaken over the past year to raise money for Winston’s Wish, including a pool competition, bake-offs, marathons and funding their helpline for a day.
