Good to know: Activation codes for lasting powers of attorney

18 September 2025

Activation codes are generated when you register a lasting power of attorney.

An activation code is a one-time code which allows your LPA to be viewed online by a specific party, such as a bank.

It is unique to you and sent only to the person making the LPA (the donor) and the main attorneys.

Once the activation code is accepted online, you will see a summary of the LPA and will include:

  • the donor’s name and details
  • the type of LPA (either ‘health & welfare’ or ‘property & financial affairs’)
  • the names of the attorneys and how they can act (jointly or jointly and severally)
  • any instructions or preferences the donor has included
  • whether the donor made a decision about life-sustaining treatment (for a health & welfare LPA).

You can then create access codes (13-character codes starting with ‘V’) to share with organisations like banks or utility providers. This will allow them to confirm that the LPA is in fact registered, and will share key details – including who the attorneys are, etc.

The activation code is valid for 12 months. However, if it expires or you lose it, you can request a new one via the gov.uk website.
