Sharing secrets to success with the lawyers of tomorrow

04 October 2017

The law is one of the most competitive industries, and for today’s students, making the first step onto the legal career ladder is harder than ever. So who could be better to share the secrets to their success than one of our young lawyers, who has built a successful career just six years after graduating?

Solicitor in our wills, probate & trusts team Tom O’Riordan returned yesterday to his alma mater, the University of Gloucestershire, to advise its current cohort of law students on the variety of different routes into the industry.

Tom, who grew up in Cheltenham and graduated from the university’s law school in 2011, also shared some top tips on how to secure an elusive training contract.

He commented: “Carving a career in law is indeed hard work, but it is interesting, fulfilling and rewarding. Law is for you if you’re passionate about it, enjoy technically challenging work and enjoy helping great clients as part of a team.

“It was a pleasure to return to the University of Gloucestershire and meet an inspiring group of tomorrow’s lawyers.”

Also imparting wisdom to the students was Nick Cox, senior partner at the firm with over 30 years’ experience. A specialist in property litigation and a highly-regarded civil and commercial mediator, Nick is ranked by independent legal directory Chambers UK.

As part of a variety of community initiatives in our 70th year, we have been supporting the University of Gloucestershire’s law school by providing mentoring and coaching.

Saba Yousif, senior law lecturer at University of Gloucestershire said: “The law school was delighted to have Tom and Nick with us today. The talk to our students about their future careers and what law firms are looking for was extremely beneficial.

“Our collaboration with Willans is invaluable to us and our students. We’re looking forward to the next round of sessions in the spring.”
