Work commences to build new Macmillan Cancer Support Centre

13 March 2014

Work to build Sussex’s first cancer information and support centre which began last month was helped by our firm.

Macmillan Cancer Support has partnered with Sussex Cancer Fund and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust to build and operate the innovative new centre for people affected by cancer.

Willans’ commercial property team managed the legal aspects of the transaction with associate solicitor, Alasdair Garbutt, handling most of the legal work, including the main contract to allow Macmillan to build and then operate the centre.

Alasdair Garbutt of Willans LLP said:
“We were pleased to be able to use our wealth of experience to help Macmillan Cancer Support on this fantastic project. I understand nothing like this exists in Sussex at the moment so this new facility is great news for them as well as for cancer patients and their families, friends and carers.”

Uniquely, the new centre, which is expertly designed with input from people affected by cancer, will uniquely offer all round support for thousands of cancer patients in a calm, friendly and non-medical environment. It will provide: specialist cancer information and advice; welfare benefits advice; counselling services; complementary therapies and physical activity support; hair and skincare advice; practical support and dietary advice and a space for self help and support groups.

It is anticipated that it will be open to the public in spring 2015.

This is one of several transactions undertaken by our lawyers for Macmillan in connection with their UK property portfolio. Macmillan is one of many well-known, national charities which we act for.
