Leading employment lawyer joins Willans

04 March 2013

We are delighted to welcome Matthew Clayton, former head of employment at a regional firm, to our firm.

He has been brought in to lead the firm’s Legal 500-rated employment team. He handles the full range of contentious and non-contentious employment law issues for clients that include multi-national companies, owner-managed businesses and not-for-profit organisations.

His particular specialisms include complex staff restructurings and employment issues concerning business transfers. He has a track record in advising on restrictions on competition imposed on ex-employees, and the protection of confidential business information. Matthew also has wide experience in resolving employment disputes involving directorship and shareholding issues.

Matthew is recognised as a leading individual in independent legal directories who describe him as ‘solutions-focussed’, ‘a solid and respected practitioner’ and ‘noted for his technical abilities’.

He regularly presents seminars for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and other businesses.

A Cambridge graduate, Matthew trained and worked in London prior to joining Rickerbys in Cheltenham in 2002.  He brings more than 16 years’ HR and employment experience to his new role at Willans.

Margaret Austen, managing partner for Willans LLP, said:

“The employment landscape is one of constant change, with frequent new laws being passed by parliament which affect individuals and businesses in a difficult economic environment. Matthew has vast employment law experience and he is well used to this changing environment.  I am confident he will be a great asset to clients and will help Willans deliver an excellent service throughout the South West.”

Commenting on his new role, Matthew said:

“I’m delighted to be joining Willans and I look forward to contributing to their reputation for providing commercially-aware advice, and personal service.”
