Charity of the Year grand total: We raised over £10k for Winston’s Wish

23 October 2018

We are delighted to have raised in excess of £10,000 for our chosen charity of 2017/18, Winston’s Wish.

This month our charity committee invited Malaney Varaljay-Boyce, head of regional fundraising and events at Winston’s Wish, to our offices to present the final fundraising figure.

Over the past financial year, our staff have taken part in a variety of fundraising activities in aid of the Gloucestershire-founded charity, which supports children, young people and their families after the death of their parent or sibling.

Fundraising activities included a quiz at Manor by the Lake attended by more than 150 people from the county’s leading businesses, a pool competition, a ‘bake-off’ competition and a range of ‘dress-down’ Fridays. The firm also funded the charity’s helpline for a day at Christmas.

James Grigg, partner and head of our charity committee, commented: “The firm first fundraised for Winston’s Wish back in 2001, when a group of our lawyers completed the three peaks challenge within 24 hours. Since then, we have seen the charity flourish and evolve into a national operation, making a difference to bereaved children across the whole country.

“It was great to see Winston’s Wish be nominated by our staff as charity of the year for 2017/2018 and for our partnership to have come full circle. We’re delighted with the amount we raised and we’ve had fun in the process, from bake sales and marathons through to a “Wear W” day and pool competition. Thank you to all of our staff, friends, clients and connections who have volunteered their time and money to help us reach this fantastic sum.”

Malaney Varaljay-Boyce, head of regional fundraising and events at Winston’s Wish, said; “It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Willans this past year. The generosity, commitment and dedication of their entire team to support our work by raising not only awareness, but also an incredible amount of funds, will enable us to continue to expand our work with bereaved children.

“£10,000 could allow one of our practitioners to support four families for a full year, helping them to come to terms with their grief and face the future with confidence and hope. On behalf of our team here at Winston’s Wish, thank you. We are sincerely grateful.”

Winston’s Wish was founded in 1992 and delivers specialist support for bereaved children and young people. The charity operates a Freephone National Helpline, web-based and face-to-face support, and also offers group programmes and outward bound weekend for teenagers.
