Public sector

The current climate of exacting spending cuts means that local government is having to innovate in ways it has never done before – through ‘lean working’, reviewing property and asset portfolios, and partnering with the private and voluntary sectors.

In recent years we have increasingly been advising local government bodies on new structures including transferring some activities to new charities, social enterprises, Community Interest Companies and mutuals. Our employment lawyers are widely experienced in advising local government bodies on staff restructurings, insourcing and outsourcing, dealing with unions, and handling employment tribunal litigation. Our property and construction lawyers regularly advise local authorities on planning, development, construction and disposal issues. They are supported by our dispute resolution lawyers in relation to property disputes. Our intellectual property lawyers handle freedom of information and data protection issues on behalf of public sector bodies. We have extensive experience of drafting commercial contracts.

We recognise the importance of working in partnership with your in-house legal services team, rather than in competition with them, and are able to provide support in specialist areas which it may not be cost-effective to service internally.
